We are not lost, we just do not know how to get back home

Our last day in Singapore. We fly out to Paris later tonight, so it may be a short while before I blog again.

Today was an interesting day. Buffet breakfast was a great start to the day, and then we went to catch the bus to the shops.
That is where it all went pear shaped due to John’s navigational sense.

We only just missed the free bus to take us to the set of shops we planned to go to. While we waited at the bus stop for the next one, a taxi driver pulled up. He said we were entitled to a free taxi service as long as we were flying Singapore Airlines and quoted our flight number.
John was uncertain, but the air con in the taxi was tempting, and the documentation provided by the taxi driver seemed OK. My ‘scam’ radar was on high alert.
He dropped us off at some diamond place. We knew the scam, went through the ritual of pretending to be interested in ‘bargains’, and thought it was a small price to pay for a free taxi ride close to where we wanted to go.

Little did John know that he had forgotten his map, and hadn’t realised the taxi driver didn’t take a critical turn to get to their original destination.
John thought the original destination was just up the road.
After a long walk, John had that moment that all males hate to admit. He knew where he was in a micro-sense, but not in a macro-sense. i.e. he was lost.
None of the street names were what he expected them to be. And the heat was oppressive.

To cut a long story short, after 2 hours of walking in oppressive heat we found our way back to where we could see the original bus stop.
... Just in time to see another free bus take off.

We eventually did find our original destination. Turns out it was only a 15 minute walk from our hotel.

John returned with his tail well and truly between his legs. Rel was very gracious, and had every reason to be quite scathing of John’s decision to accept a lift from the taxi, and to forget his map.

Rel knows that even simple trips can be an adventure with John, for all the wrong reasons.
